Razionale scientifico
The landscape of hepatocellular carcinoma is rapidly evolving. Patient population is changing, with a relative increase of cases with metabolic aetiology compared with the ones derived from chronic hepatitis. Technological evolution allows to refine treatment of localized disease, from percutaneous ablation to mini-invasive surgery. The advent of immunotherapy resulted in a breakthrough in treatment of advanced disease. Furthermore, new combinations are emerging, thanks to a better understanding of HCC biology, including the complex dynamics of tumor microenvironment. The introduction of immunotherapy even in early settings, along with its integration with transarterial treatments, discloses new opportunities, that span from an improvement in survival to the promise to increase the rate of conversion to curative approaches such as liver transplantation, with the potential to redefine the boundaries of the whole therapeutic hierarchy. As a result of this evolution, the management of HCC in gaining more and more complexity, thus the key to success in HCC treatment is multidisciplinarity, where all players, working in close collaboration, must be prone to continuously reassess and modify treatment strategy. The aim of this event is to depict an overview of HCC management, highlighting up-to-date therapeutic strategies, focusing on multidisciplinarity and treatment personalization, and keeping an eye on future directions.
