Razionale scientifico

"News in Hepatology" is an event dedicated to updates and discussions on the evolution of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways in hepatology. In recent years, the management of liver disease has involved an increasing number of specialists within a well-established integrated and multidisciplinary approach. Extraordinary advances have been achieved in the therapeutic field over the past decade, ranging from antiviral therapies to novel agents for the treatment of cholestasis, as well as innovations in the management of steatohepatitis. The conference will therefore provide an opportunity for specialists involved in liver disease management to discuss emerging therapeutic paradigms for MASLD, viral liver diseases, and cholestasis. The session dedicated to cirrhosis will primarily focus on renal dysfunction in advanced liver disease and on therapeutic strategies for portal hypertension. The role of the microbiota in liver failure, along with the potential effects of its modulation, will also be explored. A central section will be devoted to hepatocellular carcinoma. The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system has long been considered the reference framework for the diagnosis, staging, and treatment allocation of HCC. However, in recent years, its evolution has increasingly emphasized stage migration, personalization of care, and the integration of novel therapeutic options, particularly immunotherapy. Within this context, different countries have developed specific interpretations and applications of international guidelines. Italy and Spain, both with extensive experience in HCC management and well-established transplant programs, often share common principles but may differ in clinical practice, treatment sequencing, and decision-making strategies. By fostering an open discussion among leading specialists, this session aims to highlight similarities and differences in clinical approaches, identify areas of convergence, and promote a more harmonized and patient-centered management of HCC. The conference aims to provide a high-level scientific update, with the participation of leading experts, addressing the most current and innovative topics in hepatology.
